The Importance Soft Leadership Skills

Many business owners struggle to lead especially in the SMB sector. Many are good at what they have done as they have learned skills and gained experience in the field within which they work. However, being able to lead and manage a team can be a challenge.

The final outcome of many business activities relies upon how the team works, in terms of its structure, attitude and culture. Moreover, a constructive mindset of all team members not only plays a role in elevating the morale of all team members but also the overall performance of the team. McKinsey suggest four constructive mindsets that can be followed.

  1. LEAD AS A BUSINESS

To make a project successful, the whole project should be considered as a business. A team should be assembled with all the relevant leadership and business skills, resources and empowerment to act. The Team leader needs to have the designated authority and responsibility in order to achieve the project goals. Creating the sense of ownership of project in team members and being excited about the potential positive outcome of the project can make any project successful. Failing to create sense of ownership and inspiration among the team members can lead to under performance, delays, and reduced project profit.

  1. TAKE FULL OWNERSHIP OF OUTCOMES

It is vital for everyone in the team, to take ownership of the project and all the related outcomes. A project be it small or large scale is dependent upon the job performed by each individual. Create a team that values the four team personality types (Collaborator, Contributor, Challenger, Communicator) and understand how to synergise them to get a highly functional team.

  1. MAKE YOUR PARTNERS SUCCESSFUL

A constructive relationship with your external business partners can be very beneficial for the project. As working together effectively creates a win-win situation and appositive long-term relationship. So, to foster a productive and constructive relationship between parties that is based on trust and commitment and not one that is defined by one party demands being always leveraged over the other party.

  1. TRUST THE PROJECT PROCESSES BUT KNOW THAT LEADERSHIP IS REQUIRED

It is important that the project processes is implemented under the guidance of leadership, but keeping in mind the skills and experience that the individuals have. Make sure that all team members understand the process and that it is fully planned. Following processes blindly and not leaving room for new ideas can ultimately have negative effect upon the overall performance of the project.
